First Steps: 1 e4 e5 by John Emms Starting a chess game with 1 e4 e5 is so common that the resulting complex of opening systems traditionally commands its own sobriquet, “The Open Games” (1 e4 met by other replies are “Semi-Open Games” and everything else comes under “Closed Games”). The central structure with pawns on e4 and e5 often leads to play based around highly classical themes which are the bedrock of successful chess understanding. First Steps is a new opening series and is ideal for improving players who want simple and straightforward explanations. First Steps emphasizes:the basic principlesthe basic strategiesthe key tricks and trapsFirst Steps books are based around carefully selected instructive games which demonstrate exactly what both sides are trying to achieve. There is enough theory to enable the improving player to get to grips with the opening without feeling overwhelmed. If you want to take up a new opening, First Steps is the ideal place to start.

#1 Dec 27, 2014. What are some good ways for Black to really punish White, who likes to weild his Queen (and Bishops too) early, with gusto, going for an early mate? .. I don't believe that is the case here though (unless it is subconscious) .because when I play him I feel like doing a step-spinning hook kick to his head! Fun for White obviously after 4. Nc4. If 4Qxe4+ 5. Ne3 followed by 6. Nc3, if 4 d5 5. Qh5+ followed by 6. Qxd5, and if 4f5 5. Nc3 and then if 5fxe4? 6. Nd5. #1 Jul 25, 2009. I've hated 1.e4 e5 with a passion ever since learning how to play chess. It's so dull and boring. If I'm watching a Grandmaster game and 1.e4 e5 is played, I lose all interest in the game. . Look at the first 11 moves of this Evans Gambit game I played, it's a completely insane line. Yup, 4.e5 d5, and now I would have to take back my comment: White is not marginally worse anymore- he is MUCH worse as early as move four. My Arena 3.5.1 calls it "Open Game" and Chess.com's Explorer calls it "King's Pawn Opening: King's Knight Variation". But that Re8 to cover the e5 square, and then (probably) drop the bishop back to f8, and likely push d7-d7 in one go. It just does not work at move 2: too early for such an odd placement. Nf6 first? Of course the opening is rarely met at high level. Last instance I am aware of (between an IM and a GM) was not very pleasant for white: Rocha, Sergio (2392) .. I rarely go to better players for advice because I like to ask questions, as in this case what is the point of 1.e4 e5 2.Bb5?
